Williams and Evans go tit for tat at Tonfanau

In News, Tonfanau

Paul Williams and James Evans sit level on points leading the Crewe and South Cheshire’s 450cc-1100cc class after the season-opening battles at Tonfanau.

Known around the paddock as ‘Potchy’, Williams took his GP Motorcycles Triumph 675 to victory in the first two of the day’s three points-scoring races, while Evans had a bit less on the side of luck.

While running second just half a second down on Williams on the fourth of eight laps, the Shropshire native overshot the hairpin, losing a good chunk of time and ending up almost six seconds behind at the end of the next lap.

Paul ‘Potchy’ Williams won’t be returning to race action in Gwynedd this season, but he made his mark at the very first round with two out of three wins…

At the chequered flag, he had cut the gap to under four seconds and managed to hold on for a comfortable second place ahead of Grant Gaskell, who was forced to begin the race from 17th on the grid.

Evans edged ever closer in race two, nipping the lead from Williams on the sixth lap of eight for what looked like a clear victory, but a red flag moments later forced a result as they crossed the line at the end of lap five, where Williams was still in the lead and Martin Powell rounded out the rostrum.

Determined to finally break through the runner up spot, the Shrewsbury motorcycle dealer made no mistake in performance aboard his Pro Bike Repairs Yamaha R6 in race three, as he beat Gaskell to the line by 2.4 seconds, with Williams almost five seconds further back.

Leaving the season-opening round, Evans and Williams are on level pegging, but with the latter electing not to return to Tonfanau this season, Evans leads the title charge on 28 points with Gaskell trailing by just four.
