JOEY Thompson is set to return to clubland this season as he plots wildcard appearances in the ACU 250GP National Championship.
The news comes just days after he revealed a split with WH Racing, whom he had planned to run with for this season’s International Road Races as well as outings in the Dickies British Supersport series.
But as he continues the hunt for a full-time ride, Thompson is eager to get back into action on the PGR-prepared, Thompson’s Fish and Chips-supported Yamaha TZ250, which he plans to take to three NG Road Racing rounds this season.
And he’s made no bones about it – he wants to give dominant reigning champ Phil Atkinson a run for his money.
“I’m excited to get back out on a two stroke,” he told UK Clubsport. “The last time I rode it was at the Ulster Grand Prix last year, and we topped qualifying then.
“I’ll be doing three wildcards and will just try to fit them around the other main races we have this year.
“The bike is plenty capable, and the 250 championship has some really good riders in it, like Phil. But I definitely want to be up at the front, I want to win.”
