Thompson set for Bennetts BSB debut with NP Motorcycles

JOEY Thompson has inked a deal to make his Bennetts British Superbike debut this season as he joins NP Motorcycles.

The road racer, best known for his podium finishes at the North West 200 and success at Oliver’s Mount, joins Neil Pearson’s squad to pilot a brand new BMW in his very first season aboard a superbike.

Between roads events, Thompson had been a regular in the British Supersport championship with Team ILR before taking the leap and moving up to a big bike.

Before Covid put paid to last year’s TT races, the former top-five finisher even looked set to take his Suzuki GSX-R1000 to the island.

But a lack of track action over the past 12 months forced him into a rethink regarding which route to take for 2021.

“I was sort of heading down the Superstock route, but then the opportunity with Neil came along and I couldn’t really say no,” Thompson told UK Clubsport.

“I know it’s going to be a massive leap because I’ve never really ridden a Superbike before, I’m mostly used to Supersport really…but it was a great deal to be on the best bike out there, the BMW, so I’m really looking forward to it now.

“There’s nothing planned for us to do the roads yet for next season, like the TT or the North West, but we’ll just see how we get on. It’s definitely a possibility.

“The roads is where my focus is, but I think this will really improve my riding and I can’t wait to get out there.”
