HONDA British Talent Cup front-runner Eddie O’Shea will be off to pastures new next season after receiving a promotion to the Red Bull Rookies Cup.
MotoGP bosses at Dorna have selected the youngster to move up the ladder to the next step in the Road to MotoGP programme as he heads for the famous energy-drink-backed development series.
While he didn’t win a BTC race in 2020, O’Shea’s consistency – including five consecutive podium finishes mid-season – put him third in the overall standings, just three points behind series runner-up Charlie Farrer and 22 adrift of winner Franco Bourne.
Despite his strong run of form, the teen’s 2020 title shot ended in the gravel as he was forced off track in the final race of the year at Brands Hatch last month.
Under normal circumstances, there are two spaces in the Rookies Cup selection event reserved for BTC riders, but the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the selection event in 2020.
Dorna has since elected to promote a BTC rider, O’Shea, directly instead, replacing a selected candidate from the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup, which was cancelled this season.
