LEE Hembury made a surge through the pack in this evening’s JCK Ltd 600 B race as he snatched his first Isle of Man Steam Packet Southern 100 win of the week.
From ninth at the end of lap two, the Glastonbury rider stormed up the order to take the win on the very last lap.
Don Gilbert made an early break from the pack when the lights went out as he led Ben Shuttlewood by just over a second but a pack of at least four riders soon fell into a battle for podium spots.
With Rad Hughes, Frankie Stennett, Mike Mace and even newcomer Daniel Forbes all vying for the rostrum position, Gilbert was able to stretch his lead on lap two to just over two seconds.
But Hughes was on the move and looking to catch Shuttlewood as he moved to within a tenth of second place when they began lap three.
Moments later, however, Shuttlewood took a big chunk out of Gilbert’s lead, chopping over 1.4sec out of his advantage while Hughes dropped into a third-place battle with Mace and Stennett.
But it was all change with three laps to go as the top five received a vigorous stir – Shuttlewood hit the lead but was just half a second clear of Mace with Gilbert less than a second off the front and Hughes chasing Stennett just a few tenths further back.
With two laps to go, Shuttlewood stretched his advantage slightly as he and Mace gapped the pursuing trio, but on the move and charging hard was Hembury, who clocked the quickest lap of the race as he moved into the leading fight from well down the order.
Just 1.6sec covered the top seven as they began the final lap, but in the final corners it was Hembury who made a stunning comeback from ninth on lap one to bag the win 0.773sec clear of Stennett.
Shuttlewood snatched third less than a second further back while Mace pipped Gilbert by a tenth to take fourth.
