North West 200: Irwin sets Superbike pole and shatters lap record

In News, North West 200, Roads

GLENN Irwin seared to the fastest ever time of the North West 200 circuit this afternoon as he beat Dean Harrison to pole position for the Superbike race.

The Quattro Plant Wicked Coatings Kawasaki rider scorched to a 4:21.767 in the final minutes of today’s second qualifying session, beating Michael Dunlop’s previous outright lap record from 2016 by just over three tenths of a second.

After controlling a majority of the session with a 4:21.973sec lap, Silicone Engineering Kawasaki’s Dean Harrison had to settle for second while Be Wiser Ducati’s Alastair Seeley will complete the front row after setting a 4:22.044 just after the chequered flag flew.

Tyco BMW’s Michael Dunlop will head the second row of the grid ahead of Milenco by Padgett’s Motorcycles Honda man Conor Cummins, with Ashcourt Racing’s Lee Johnston starting sixth.

Michael Rutter’s progress with his RC-213v was good enough for seventh while Buildbase Suzuki’s event rookie Richard Cooper and Honda Racing’s Ian Hutchinson will round out the top nine.
