La Liga is back in action and matchweek 1 gave us some incredible memories. Matchweek 2 is up next, and the highlight of the weekend will be the clash between Real Betis and Atletico Madrid at the Benito Villamarin Stadium – two teams that finished inside the top six last term and will aim for even higher positions this season.

The two teams started the 2023/24 campaign on the right note, as Betis men overcame Villarreal away 2-1 while Atletico defeated newcomers Granada 3-1 at home. For both teams, the upcoming game – kick-off is on August 20, 9:30 pm local time – will be one of the biggest tests of the season, so we expect them to approach the game with caution. With that said, here are our Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid tips.

Under 10 corners

If you haven’t watched Atleti last season and decide to tune into the upcoming game, you will be surprised to find out that Diego Simeone’s has done a full 180 and now tries to instil a possession-based, attack-oriented style of play at the Colchoneros. So, in the match at Benito Villamarin, we will see two teams fighting for possession and the main battle will happen in the middle of the park, not around the penalty boxes.

The two teams are unlikely to register a high number of shots, and this would result in a fewer number of corner kicks, of course. This part of our Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid tips is inspired by the numbers from their matcheek 1 encounters, when Betis and Atletico recorded four and three corner kicks respectively.

Bet365 gives 1.83 odds on this line.

Both teams to score? Yes

While we do not expect Betis and Atleti to exchange a large number of shots during Sunday’s clash, we do think that both teams will be able to end up on the scoresheet.

With 1.95 odds, the bookmakers at Bet365 do not exclude it either.

The goals may not necessarily come from an endless number of attacks but rather from the defensive problems that the teams showed in their respective opening league matches. Betis proved weak on set-pieces, and they also have lost two centre-backs over the summer. As for Atletico, Simeone continues experimenting with the backline and has started prioritising centre-backs who are better on the ball ahead of those that excel primarily in the defensive department.

This is to say that errors at the back will be guaranteed, and the forwards on both sides are good enough to capitalise on those errors. Moreover, three out the last four matches between Betis and Atletico resulted in at least three goals.

Total goals over 2.5

In a similar capacity, we should expect the defensive problems to lead to at least three goals scored in the match.

This bet would’ve been a winning one last week for either team, and Bet365 gives 2.10 odds on it repeating again this Sunday.

As mentioned above, the teams have enough firing power in their squad. For Betis it is Borja Iglesias (a monster in the box), Luiz Henrique and Ayoze Perez (both great on the flanks). And there is also Willian Jose, who can come in as a substitute and deliver the final blow. Atletico have Antoine Griezmann (recorded a whopping 15 goals and 17 assists in the league last term), as well as Alvaro Morata or Memphis Depay who both scored on opening day and will look to continue their streaks.
