Real Betis vs Barcelona Preview

After taking a break to compete in the Spanish Super Cup, Barcelona are back to competing in La Liga, and on Sunday, January 21, they will be paying a visit to Real Betis. The kick-off at the Benito Villamarin stadium is scheduled for 6:30 pm local time.

The Catalans still insist that they are in the title race, which means that they cannot afford to drop points anymore, something to keep in mind in our Real Betis vs Barcelona prediction. The hosts will not make it easy, though, as they are fighting for European spots in 2023/24 as well.

Real Betis Preview

Real Betis are sitting in seventh place in La Liga with 31 points after 20 matches, one point below European qualification spots. Coached by Manuel Pellegrini, the Verdiblancos have scored 22 and conceded 20 goals.

In the recent five league outings, Real Betis have recorded one win, three draws and one loss.

Both teams are dealing with squad problems, which needs to be considered in the Real Betis vs Barcelona tips. Thus, the hosts cannot count on Marc Bartra, Claudio Bravo, Guido Rodriguez, Aitor Ruibal through injury, as well as Chadi Riad, Abde Ezzalzouli and Youssouf Sabaly who are away on international duty.

Barcelona Preview

Barcelona sit fourth in La Liga with 41 points after 19 matches. They are eight points behind current league-leaders Girona but have a game in hand. Xavi’s men have a record of 36 scored and 22 conceded goals in 2023/24 La Liga.

As for their recent league form, the Catalans have recorded three wins, one draw and one loss.

The visitors are missing Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gavi, Marcos Alonso, Inigo Martinez, Raphinha and Joao Cancelo due to injury. Despite having a more bloated calendar, the visitors are seen as the favourites in the Real Betis vs Barcelona odds.

Betting Tips for Real Betis vs Barcelona

Both teams to score? Yes

Although we do not expect the upcoming clash at the Benito Villamarin to be anything extraordinary in terms of intensity – with both teams suffering squad problems – we still hope for an eventful match. Our first prediction is a goal in each net, with Bet365 giving 1.67 odds on both teams scoring.

Despite having Isco as the mastermind of their midfield, Real Betis have been a fairly conservative team so far, with half of their 2023/24 La Liga matches ending in draws. Yet the Verdiblancos have kept just eight clean sheets in the meantime, including two in the last five matches.

As for Barcelona, it was their incredible defensive formation that won them the league title last season, but that solidity is gone. With their starting goalkeeper out with an injury, the Catalans are conceding even more often, with one clean sheet in the last five La Liga games.

Over 2.5 goals

Although seven matches which involved Real Betis finished with a 1-1 scoreline this term, we believe there will be at least one more goal on Sunday. The odds on over 2.5 goals stand at 1.70 on Bet365.

While the hosts might be okay with another draw against a better-placed rival, only a win will be an acceptable result for Barcelona. If they drop points again, the Catalans risk falling out of the title race, with Real Madrid and Girona already being far ahead.

But this does not necessarily mean that the visitors will be the ones scoring more goals. Desperate for the three points, they will inevitably leave free spaces behind, which Real Betis will look to exploit.

Three out of the last five La Liga matches for Barcelona were high-scoring games. And if you caught the 1-1 draw with Valencia, you know that Xavi’s men deserved to score a second goal that night.

Robert Lewandowski to score anytime

Robert Lewandowski has been widely criticised by both the fans and the media for his poor performances since the start of the campaign. So far, the 35-year-old striker has a record of 12 goals and five assists in 26 appearances across all competitions, numbers below those you would expect from a top-level striker.

In the last five La Liga matches, the Poland international has scored only once – in the 4-2 loss to Girona. Yet his current form across all competitions seems to be improving, with three goals in five matches.

Real Betis clearly do not have the best defence in Spain, especially with so many missing players. We expect that Lewandowski will continue the positive trend with a goal at the Benito Villamarin, and Bet365 offer 2.20 odds on him scoring anytime in the match.
