Norwich City vs Southampton Preview

The turn of the year will only increase the number of matches in the EFL Championship, and Monday, January 1, promises an entertaining match between Norwich City and Southampton. The kick-off at Carrow Road is scheduled for 3 pm local time.

Both teams are fighting for promotion play-off spots in 2023/24, although the distance between the two in the league standings is quite big. The main reason behind this is stability: whereas the Saints have been more or less consistent since the start of the campaign, the Canaries had a horrific spell in October. We will discuss this further in our Norwich City vs Southampton prediction.

Norwich City Preview

Norwich City finished 13th in the EFL Championship last season and a similar fate may await them in 2023/24. The Canaries are a mid-table team at the moment, although they are only a few points away from the promotion play-offs zone, meaning that hope is not lost.

At the same time, the hosts have been struggling with consistency this term, a fact to take into account in our Norwich City vs Southampton tips.

The Yellows were sitting inside the play-off zone at some point but then followed a run of six winless matches (including five defeats) in October-November which saw them drop mid-table.

Southampton Preview

Following their relegation from the Premier League, the Saints seem determined to win immediate promotion back to the top division. While not quite up to par with Leicester City and Ipswich Town when it comes to results, Southampton has definitely been one of the best teams in the 2023/24 EFL Championship in terms of actual football.

New coach Russel Martin had a difficult September, as the Saints suffered four straight defeats, but the team bounced back and went unbeaten in the next three months.

The visitors are enjoying an incredible run of form and are rightfully considered the favourites when it comes to the Norwich City vs Southampton odds.

Betting Tips Norwich City vs Southampton

Both teams to score? Yes

One thing we haven’t mentioned so far is that both teams are attack-oriented in their approaches. Thus, our first Norwich City vs Southampton prediction is for both teams to score, with Bet365 giving 1.61 odds on it happening.

In terms of defence, the Canaries are one of the worst teams in the 2023/24 EFL Championship despite being a mid-table club. Coached by David Wagner, the hosts have so far conceded on average over 1.5 goals per game. The Saints, despite playing away, should have no problem scoring.

At the same time, Southampton is not the most defensive team either and have more conceded goals than matches played, although their average is just slightly above one conceded goal per game. The Canaries have failed to score in only one home outing this term so far – in the goalless draw with Preston North End – but we do not expect this scenario to repeat itself.

Over 2.5 goals

Taking a step forward in our Norwich City vs Southampton tips, we expect a somewhat of a goal fest at Carrow Road. The odds on over 2.5 goals stand at 1.72 on Bet365.

Since it will be two attacking teams with average-to-bad defences going head to head on Monday, we should logically see a high number of scoring chances and thus goals. Another important factor is the Yellows and the Saints will get just two days of rest ahead of the clash on New Year’s Day, and fatigue is bound to result in defensive blunders.

Moreover, some of the best goalscorers of the 2023/24 campaign will be on the pitch, with Jonathan Rowe (Norwich City) and Adam Armstrong (Southampton) both being involved in the golden boot race this term. The two will have personal reasons to get on the scoresheet.

Southampton win

We believe that Southampton will carry on with their good run of form into 2024 and will start the year with a win. Bet365 offers 2.15 odds on the Saints getting the full three points on Monday.

We have to commend the Saints for their truly impressive results since October, and their stability and larger squad should come into play at Carrow Road. With both Leicester and Ipswich dropping points in recent weeks, this is the perfect opportunity for the visitors to strengthen their stance in the league table and hopefully position themselves for a finish in automatic promotion spots.

Norwich and their solid attack may be enough to win them points against rivals from the bottom half of the table, but the defensive fragility often costs them against tougher opponents. This is exactly what should happen in the upcoming clash, as the bloated calendar is unlikely to help the Canaries strengthen their backline’s performances.
