Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea Preview

The start of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is quickly approaching, with the tournament to be opened with a clash between hosts Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau. The next day, on Sunday, January 14, the other two teams in Group A – Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea – will go head to head. The kick-off in Abidjan is scheduled for 2 pm local time.

The Super Eagles are typically regarded among the favourites in any continental competition due to their past successes and strong roster. However, as we will highlight further in our Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea prediction, they are approaching this year’s tournament in underwhelming form.

Nigeria Preview

Nigeria qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after topping Group A in the qualification stage with five wins and one loss. The Super Eagles have won the competition three times in the past, most recently in 2013.

Recent form is more important for our Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea tips, though, and Jose Peseiro’s men do not fare too well in this regard. Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Nigeria has recorded two wins, three draws and one loss. In preparation for the tournament, Nigeria lost to Guinea 2-0 on January 8.

Nevertheless, the Super Eagles have one of the best squads in Africa with players like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze in their squad. Victor Boniface misses the tournament through injury.

Equatorial Guinea Preview

Equatorial Guinea booked their place at the tournament by finishing second in Group J – tied on points with group-winners Tunisia – with four wins, one draw and one loss. Nzelang Nacional, as the team is nicknamed, makes its fourth appearance at the final tournament, with their best result being a fourth-place finish in 2015.

In terms of recent form, Equatorial Guinea has recorded two wins and three draws since the start of 2023/24 term. Coached by Juan Micha, they drew 1-1 with Djibouti on January 9 before taking off for the tournament.

The Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea odds have a clear favourite, which can be explained by the difference in the squads. When it comes to Nzelang Nacional, a neutral fan may recognize three names at most – Emilio Nsue, Jose Machis and Saul Coco.

Betting TIps for Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea

Nigeria win

We have praised Nzelang Nacional above but we still do not believe that they have what it takes to achieve a positive start at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Thus, our first Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea prediction is a win for the Super Eagles, with Bet365 offering 1.50 odds on it.

Jose Peseiro’s team is not exactly in the best form possible but they have still shown positive signs in the recent six months. Equatorial Guinea’s recent results may look better on paper, but we should take into account that they have been facing weaker rivals in recent months.

Besides having a better squad, Nigeria is also much more experienced than their opponents when it comes to final tournaments. Their next opponents will be hosts Ivory Coast on January 18, and they need a win on Sunday to approach that match-up with confidence.

Under 2.5 goals

Nigeria has the most impressive attack at the tournament, at least in terms of names. Even with Victor Boniface out with an injury, the Super Eagles can still count on the likes of Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, Umar Sadiq and many others.

However, the team has been going through a goal-scoring crisis in recent months, and we expect that trend to continue on Sunday. To back it up with numbers, the Super Eagles have scored 13 goals in the six games they have played since September. Almost half of those goals came in the 6-0 win over minnows Sao Tome and Principe, though.

Moreover, Equatorial Guinea is a fairly defensive team, conceding two goals in the five matches played since September while scoring four. We predict another low-scoring game on Sunday, with the odds on under 2.5 goals standing at 1.57 on Bet365.

Both teams to score? No

With Nigeria struggling in attack as of recent and Equatorial Guinea being a defensive team to begin with, we expect that at least one of the sides will fail to score this Sunday, Bet365 offers 1.44 odds on it to happen.

Nigeria did not put a goal past Guinea in the recent warm-up game. Their previous match without a goal had been the 1-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau back in March. Against an opponent that knows how to park the bus, it is not excluded that 90 minutes will not be enough for the Super Eagles to get on the scoresheet.

Nevertheless, our main expectation is that Equatorial Guinea will be the ones failing to score. Thus, you could combine this and the first prediction, as Bet365 gives 2.00 odds on Nigeria beating Nzelang Nacional to nil.
