Following the departure of the head coach, Neill Collins, Barnsley is looking for a new coach for the next season. Managed by an interim coach, Martin Devaney, Barnsley was outplayed by Bolton in the League One playoff and it is unlikely that Devaney will receive a full-fledged contract. Given the variety of managers soon-to-be-available, it seems like the board wants to pick a figure who is not a stranger to the club.

Bookmakers have opened the market on the replacement of Martin Devaney as long as the interim coach was appointed. At the moment, judging by the odds given by Parimatch, there are several main contenders, from which former Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel appears to be the favourite:

Daniel Stendel

Daniel Stendel appears to be the favourite to be the head coach of Barnsley as he seems to be ready for another challenge after coaching the reserve team of Hannover for a while. Currently, he received the honours of winning Regionalliga Nord with Hannover II but given his past credentials, he will likely pick up the possibility to come back to Barnsley. Stendel has a history with Barnsley, having managed the club from June 2018 to October 2019.

During his tenure, he led Barnsley to promotion to the Championship by finishing second in League One. However, his time at Barnsley ended after a run of ten games without a win. Stendel's managerial career also includes stints at Hearts, where he notably refused to take wages during the COVID-19 pandemic, and AS Nancy in France, although his time there was short-lived due to poor results. Perhaps, it is that under his tenure Barnsley promoted to the Championship, makes him the key figure for the board.

Michael Duff

Duff is known for his managerial roles at Cheltenham Town, where he achieved promotion to League One, and more recently at Barnsley, where he had been managing since June 2022 until the end of the 2022/23 season. However, he seems to be eager to join Huddersfield Town after taking a break from football, and it is unlikely that he wants to come back to Barnsley.

Gerhard Struber

Struber also has a notable history with Barnsley, having managed the club from November 2019 to October 2020. He successfully guided Barnsley to avoid relegation from the Championship in the 2019/20 season. Moreover, Struber’s managerial career also includes roles at Wolfsberger AC, FC Liefering, and New York Red Bulls. With his most recent tenure at RB Salzburg, he was not able to win the Austrian Bundesliga, leaving the title to Sturm Graz, after which the club and the coach have parted ways.

Grant McCann

Grant McCann is currently the manager of Doncaster Rovers. McCann has a rich managerial history, including tenures at Peterborough United, Hull City, and Doncaster Rovers. Notably, he led Hull City to promotion as League One champions in the 2020/21 season. McCann returned to Doncaster Rovers in May 2023 and led the team to a club record-equalling ten-match winning run, making a deep connection with the fans and the board. Currently, he is involved in planning summer transfers with Doncaster, thus, his potential move to Barnsley is not the very likely scenario, given how he emphasised his comfort at Doncaster.

Scott Lindsey

Lindsey's managerial career includes roles at Swindon Town, where he served as Assistant Manager before taking on the managerial role at Crawley Town. His tenure at Crawley has been highlighted by the promotion to the League One. After such an achievement, it is unlikely that Lindsey will be in a mood of switching sides, as he is already one of the fans' favourite manager, taking the team from the relegation zone to the promotion.
