Newcastle United vs Manchester City Preview

The Premier League went on a short break last weekend due to the FA Cup fixtures but will be back in force this week. One of the top games to look forward to is the clash at St James’ Park on Saturday, January 13, where Newcastle United will host Manchester City. The kick-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm local time.

The hosts finished inside the top four last term but are having a much more difficult 2023/24 campaign, something to consider in the Newcastle United vs Manchester City prediction. As for the visitors, they still remain involved in the title race despite the slower start.

Newcastle United Preview

The Magpies sit ninth in the Premier League with 29 points after 20 matches, and have been underperforming massively compared to last season. So far, Newcastle have recorded 39 scored and 29 conceded goals.

Coached by Eddie Howe, the team has an awful recent form, with just one win in the last five league matches.

The reason behind the Magpies’ struggles – and it will also be important for our Newcastle United vs Manchester City tips – is the long absentees list. Thus, the hosts will miss Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson, Matt Targett, Joe Willock, Nick Pope, Callum Wilson, Joelinton (all injured) and Sandro Tonali (suspended) on Saturday.

Manchester City Preview

Manchester City are currently placed third in the Premier League with 40 points after 19 matches, with one game in hand compared to the teams sitting above. Pep Guardiola's men have scored 45 and conceded 21 goals in the league.

The Citizens had a difficult November but have picked up form. Thus, their recent league record includes three wins, one draw and one loss.

The visitors have been slowly recovering their injured players and are only expected to miss Zack Steffen and Erling Haaland on Saturday. In good form and with the majority of the key players available, it is no surprise that the Newcastle United vs Manchester City odds favour them.

Betting Tips for Newcastle United vs Manchester City

Manchester City win

The Magpies are coming after a 3-0 win over eternal rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup, which could serve as a morale boost for Howe’s men. Still, they have a hundred more problems to worry about, and our first Newcastle United vs Manchester City prediction is a win for the Citizens. Bet365 give 1.55 odds on it happening.

Man City are on a run of five straight wins if we were to take their matches across all competitions. The team has learnt to cope without Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland and should now look only better that the Belgian midfielder has recovered from injury.

Newcastle were a solid team last season, especially in defence, but that has not been the case in 2023/24. Against a refreshed and motivated Man City, they barely stand a chance.

Over 2.5 goals

Continuing with the topic of Newcastle’s weak defence, we expect a high-scoring game at St James’ Park. The odds on over 2.5 goals stand at 1.61 on Bet365.

Out of the last five recent matches the Magpies have played in the Premier League, there have been at least three goals in four of them. The only exception is the 1-0 loss to Luton Town on December 23. In City’s case, there were three high-scoring games in the meantime.

Our primary prediction is that Man City will score three goals on the road against Newcastle. With Arsenal slipping up, Guardiola needs to send league leaders Liverpool a strong message regarding who is their main competitor in the title race. Additionally, it is not excluded that the hosts score as well, and then Man City will need at least two goals to get the win.

Julian Alvarez to score anytime

The previous 18 months have taught us that Erling Haaland is the main goalscorer at Manchester City. The team has needed some time to adjust to his absence, but Julian Alvarez’s recent form has made the fans forget that their starting striker is out with an injury.

Since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, the Argentina international has scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 29 matches in all competitions. However, his recent form is what concerns us the most, as the 23-year-old has recorded five goals in the last five matches across the board.

Since Haaland is still recovering, Julian Alvarez is predicted to start up front for the Citizens at St James’ Park. We predict that the forward will continue with his hot form and add another goal on Saturday, luckily Newcastle’s defence presents the perfect opportunity to do so. Bet365 offer 2.25 odds on Alvarez scoring anytime during the match.
