Neither Newcastle United nor Liverpool have had a perfect start in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. The Toon ran over Aston Villa 5-1 on the opening day but suffered a 1-0 at the hands of Manchester City on Matchday 2. As for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the Reds started with a 1-1 draw with Chelsea on the road but overcame Bournemouth 3-1 at Anfield the next weekend.

Both teams have shown positive and negative signs in the opening matches, and our Newcastle United vs Liverpool tips will take that into account. The kick-off is scheduled for Sunday, August 27 at 4:30 pm UK time.

Both teams to score? Yes

As we mentioned above, Newcastle and Liverpool don’t look like polished products at the moment. The Magpies looked formidable going forward against Aston Villa but still conceded a goal. Eddie Howe undertook a more defensive approach against Man City, yet his team still allowed four shots on target (and, predictably, did not create much up front). As for Liverpool, the team is still struggling in midfield after all the ins and outs from this summer. The Reds lack solidity in the middle of the park, which has resulted in zero clean sheets so far.

Liverpool are always down for an open-game scenario while Newcastle are under pressure to deliver a positive result following the loss at Etihad, so another park-the-bus situation is unlikely. A goal from both sides reads like a real possibility, with William Hill giving 1.44 odds on this event.

Draw

With four losses and one draw in the last five matches against Liverpool, Newcastle have not done well against the Reds as of late. Thus, even a draw at St James’ Park this Sunday may be viewed as an improvement for Howe’s men. Liverpool, too, may be satisfied with just one point away from home against a direct rival considering that the season is still in its early stages.

This is to say that, if the match is entering the final 15 minutes and the score is level, it is way more likely that the teams will prioritize not conceding another than going all out for the win. Losing a player due to injury, with the European competitions starting next month, would be a way worse outcome.

Certainly, this part of our Newcastle United vs Liverpool tips is on the riskier side, and William Hill’s 4.00 odds on the draw indicate that.

Under 3.5 goals

While we expect Newcastle to be more attack-oriented than in the previous match, the Toon will likely approach the game with a healthy degree of caution. After all, they cannot ignore the good form of Liverpool’s attackers Luiz Diaz (2 goals) and Mohamed Salah (one goal, 2 assists).

Even if the game does not end in a draw and one team gets the edge over the opponent, we do not expect a goal fest at St James Park this weekend. Thus, the William Hill 1.67 odds on under 3.5 goals seem reasonable.

Let’s not forget that Liverpool themselves will be less adventurous than in the game against Bournemouth: with Alexis Mac Allister suspended, Wataru Endo – who has a more defensive profile – is likely to play from the start. Perhaps Cody Gakpo, who’s shown his defensive ineptitude in the opening matches, will be dropped too, and that means significantly less firing power for Klopp’s men.

Nevertheless, remember that our tips are not a call to action but rather a friendly suggestion. Always gamble responsibly.
