The last match of round of 16 will see Morocco and South Africa fighting for quarter finals. Morocco, as always, is seen as one of the pre-tournament favourites due to the level of players and recent World Cup performance. South Africa was not among potential favourites to reach play-offs but it managed to outlast Tunisia and Namibia at the group stage. Morocco have reached quarter finals in two of the last three African Cup of Nations but in this match it won’t be that easy. In the last 8 head to head matches between teams, the Atlas Lions’ won only two (with three draws and three losses as well).

Morocco vs. South Africa Preview

Morocco Preview

Morocco did not face challenges during the group stage, securing two comfortable wins (3-0 against Tanzania and 1-0 against Zambia). The team plays conservative football, obviously saving strength for the playoffs. It is worth noting that despite being usual pre-tournament favourites, Morocco have never gone further than quarter finals since 2004 when the Atlas Lions’ reached the final. This is also confirmed by careful attention to Hakim Ziyech, who did not play a full game in the group stage despite being one of the best on the field (1 goal and 1 assist). Walid Regrarui confidently manages the team's stamina and performance indicating that Morrocan intentions are far beyond stopping their journey at round of 16.

South Africa Preview

South Africa won only 1 out of 3 matches in the group stage, and that victory was over Namibia, which is certainly not the level of Morocco. South Africa's only thing to be remembered in previous matches was their closed style, as it was evident during 0-0 with Tunisia and 0-2 defeats with Mali. Against Morocco, the team will have one task, not to miss more than a certain number of goals in their own goal. At the same time, South Africa’s coach Hugo Broos seems not to care about the status of outsiders and style of game his team plays as long as it brings necessary results. It is also worth remembering that South Africa is usually not doing well on the African Cup of Nations field - just three wins in the 13 AFCON games.

Betting Tips for Morocco vs. South Africa

Morocco to Win

Morocco is confident enough to secure another comfortable win for themselves and not to overload the players. All of the team’s stars such as Ashraf Hakimi, Bono, and Hakim Ziyech are in good shape and are most likely to start the game. Despite the disadvantage in the head to head matches, the Atlas Lions’ currently have more cohesive game style and can outperform South Africa in a classy manner. William Hill evaluates this Morocco vs. South Africa prediction with odds of 1.56.

Total Under 2.5

The Atlas Lions’ do not push far when it comes to increasing their advantage. Even during the 3-0 win over Tanzania, the last two goals were scored at the end of the match, after a red card from Tanzanian Novatus Miroshi. Moreover, during the round of 16, only one game has seen more than two goals - when Angola cruised past Namibia in a crazy match. South Africa is also disappointing in the attacking build-up which is why is hard to believe that the match will include many goals. William Hill gives the odds of 1.56 for this Morocco vs. South Africa tip.

1st Half Winner - Morocco

Given the play style and advantage in class, it is very likely that Moroccans will push themselves in the first half in order to sit back and save strength for the potential quarter finals. Moreover, Morocco won their first halves in 6 consecutive matches and has all the potential to extend this worthy streak up to 7. William Hill gives 2.20 as Morocco vs. South Africa odds for this outcome.
