Potential Mason Greenwood Next Club

Mason Greenwood made his debut for Manchester United in 2019 at the age of 17, becoming one of the youngest debutants in the club’s history. In the following two seasons, the Englishman established himself as a regular starter at Old Trafford and has, to date, recorded 35 goals in 129 matches for the Red Devils.
However, his career was put on pause in January 2022 when – on accusations of of attempted rape, assault, controlling and coercive behavior coming from his partner – Greenwood was arrested. The police dropped all charges in February of 2023 after key witnesses withdrew from the case, but Mason never returned to group training at Man United as he had been suspended by the club.
Most recently, Man United announced that the parties had agreed that the best way out of the situation would be for Mason to leave the club and continue his career elsewhere. Rumours had it that United was planning on bringing the 21-year-old back into the squad but the public outrage changed their mind.
List of Potential Mason Greenwood Next Club
Although his departure from Old Trafford has been confirmed, it remains a mystery what Mason Greenwood’s next club will be. The biggest downside of signing the Englishman at this point in his career would be the damage to the buying club’s image, as Mason was never proven innocent in court – charges being dropped is not the same, and the evidence which was made public convinced many that Greenwood did do the things he was initially accused of.
Any Saudi Pro League Club
Away from the public eye and on a big salary may be the best Greenwood can realistically hope for at the moment. The Saudi Pro League has been the destination for many football stars this summer, but Greenwood may become the first player in his early 20s to move from a top European side to Saudi Arabia. The circumstances, of course, are very different for Mason.
The media has already tipped Mason Greenwood to join a club in the Saudi Pro League but, at the same time, it’s noted that the country is trying to cleanse its image following years of reported human rights violations, including against women. After the initial reports came out, Al Ettifaq’s coach Steven Gerrard publicly labelled them “fake news” on his Instagram page.
In this regard, bringing Greenwood over may nullify the arrivals of other stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Neymar. Those three had their own controversies, of course, but none were in the public’s recent memory.
AS Roma
AS Roma is by far the biggest name on the Mason Greenwood next club list. It is said that Jose Mourinho – who is in need of a forward following the long-term injury of Tammy Abraham and who may know Mason from back when he coached Man United – would be open to seeing the 21-year-old at Stadio Olimpico.
From a sporting perspective, AS Roma would be a great place for the youngster to relaunch his career. However, the fans’ reaction to a potential transfer may still be an issue. For the past few years, Serie A has promoted the campaign Un Rosso Alla Violenza in which players come out for the game wearing red paint on their cheeks in an attempt to raise awareness of domestic violence against women and promote the anti-stalking and anti-abuse support hotline. Now, imagine Greenwood participating in the campaign after all the allegations against him.
Galatasaray
Outside the top 5 leagues but still playing Champions League football on a regular basis, Greenwood would not escape the public eye if he were to move to Galatasaray. The Turkish Super Lig club has been linked with the 21-year-old, although we should mention that Gala has already spent big this summer on the arrivals of Mauro Icardi, Wilfried Zaha, Hakim Ziyech and others – all of them on big contracts.
Man United have not terminated Greenwood’s contract, which means that they have the right to request a transfer fee from the clubs that come knocking. And in addition to the expenses, Galatasaray do not necessarily need more players up front, which would make Mason’s transfer opportunistic rather than strategic.
Istanbul Basaksehir
Istanbul Basaksehir is a club that is no stranger to controversies – while on loan at the Gray Owls in 2018/19, Arda Turan received a suspended jail sentence of almost three years after firing a gun in a hospital following a brawl with a famous Turkish singer. So, Greenwood’s arrival may not be viewed as that big of a deal.
Unlike Galatasaray, Istanbul Basaksehir cannot offer Greenwood European football this season as they finished only fifth last term. However, they would benefit from bolstering their attack and may be able to come with a competitive offer for the winger. Rumour has it that Istanbul Basaksehir is one of the few clubs openly interested in the English international.
Any English Club
As inconceivable as it may seem, Mason Greenwood’s reported priority is to continue in the Premier League. For now, though, there has been no confirmed interest from any top division club for obvious reasons – nobody wants the inevitable reputational damage. It is said that a couple of Championship clubs had approached Man United but quickly pulled out after seeing the backlash the Red Devils faced after the initial intentions to bring the player back into the squad.
Be it a top or second tier club, anyone in England who thinks of signing the 21-year-old should be ready to explain their reasoning publicly and prepare a response to the fans who will definitely protest the move.
