Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview

In the first week of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, it appeared like the title race in England was going to be between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Both teams spent at least a couple of weeks on top of the league table but that is no longer the case for either side. However, this does not mean that Pep Guardiol and Ange Postecoglou will give up their aspirations just yet – something to consider in our Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur prediction.

On Sunday, December 3, the two teams will go head to head at Etihad Stadium. The kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 pm local time.

Manchester City Preview

The Citizens had a perfect start to the 2023/24 Premier League as they won the first six matches. However, something broke in Pep Guardiola’s team in late September, and since then, Man City have recorded three wins, two draws and two losses in the league. This sees the defending champions sitting in second place with 29 points, one point below Arsenal.

As it will become evident in the Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur tips, the hosts’ defence is not what it used to be last term. With 13 goals conceded, they no longer have the most secure backline in England. Their attacking output of 33 scored goals remains unmatched, though.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

As for the visitors, it is far more likely to identify what went wrong for them – the injuries suffered by key players like James Maddison, Ivan Perisic and Pape Matar Sarr. Spurs used to top the Premier League back in October but, following three straight losses, find themselves in fifth place with 26 points. They have a respectable record of 25 goals scored and 17 conceded.

The positive news is that Postecoglou will get Yves Bissouma back for the match at Etihad Stadium, although the three-match suspension of starting centre-back Cristian Romero is not over yet.

With a depleted squad, it is no wonder that the Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur odds do not favour the London team.

Betting Tips Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

Erling Haaland to score anytime

Whereas Man City’s performances have been inconsistent in recent weeks, one player they can always rely on is Erling Haaland. The Norway international continues with his superb form from last season and has so far scored 14 goals in 13 Premier League appearances. He is currently the leading goalscorer in England, four goals ahead of Mohamed Salah.

To back this claim with actual numbers, Haaland ended up scoring in Man City’s recent draws with Chelsea and Liverpool, suggesting that he is able to do his job even if the rest of the team is lagging behind.

With Tottenham unable to keep a clean sheet in the last four Premier League outings, Haaland is certain to get his scoring opportunity on Sunday. We believe that he will convert it as he usually does, and Bet365 offer 1.44 odds on Erling scoring anytime during the match.

Both to score and Manchester City to win

And speaking about goals, we expect quite a few of them at Etihad Stadium. In fact, we believe that both teams will score but Manchester City will come out victorious. The odds on it happening stand at 2.40 on Bet365.

We can easily make a case for why the home side will score, and we practically did that in the Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur prediction up above. However, we believe that the visitors will be on the scoresheet as well.

First, Man City have conceded at least once in all of their recent four matches. Even Bournemouth, despite losing the match 6-1, was able to score at Etihad Stadium. And second, Tottenham have a respectable attack as proven by their 25 scored goals.

While Spurs may be missing some important starters, they have still got their captain Heung-min Son, the third-best goal scorer this term so far. But that shouldn’t be enough for the Lilywhites to get any points on the road.

Over 4 cards

Tottenham do not have their best players available but that has not meant that Ange Postecoglou has changed the way his team approaches any match. Even amid the losses, Spurs continued to play with a high backline, relentlessly pressing the opposition on every area of the pitch.

Pep Guardiola knows how to deal with this kind of matches – after all, he’s been competing with Jurgen Klopp for more than five seasons now – but that does not mean he wouldn’t prefer a calmer match where his team has 70% possession. Instead, the Citizens will be forced to countrepress Spurs in order to recover the ball, and this should lead to a high number of fouls and thus bookings in the match.

Bet365 gives 1.57 odds on over 4 cards. Tottenham record slightly over three cards per game, but those numbers are higher against opposition that also applies pressure. This is exactly what we expect at Etihad Stadium.
