Liverpool vs Manchester United Preview

One of the most exciting derbies in England is upon us, as Liverpool are set to host Manchester United on Sunday, December 17. The kick-off at Anfield is scheduled for 4:30 local time.

The hosts missed out on UEFA Champions League spots last season but have started the 2023/24 campaign in force. The Red Devils, meanwhile, have had a poor start to the season despite finishing inside the Premier League top four last term.

Moreover, the two teams are approaching the derby in very different form, something we will expand on further in our Liverpool vs Manchester United prediction.

Liverpool Preview

The Reds top the Premier League with 37 points after 16 games. Jurgen Klopp’s men are playing great football, boasting the second-best attack (36 goals scored) and the joint-best defence (15 goals conceded) in the league. They are on a run of four wins and one draw in the last five domestic matches.

One thing that could influence the Liverpool vs Manchester United tips is the Reds’ Thursday clash in the UEFA Europa League. However, barely any starters featured for more than 45 minutes against Union Saint-Gilloise.

The hosts have a long injury list with Alexis MacAllister, Andrew Robertson, Joel Matip, Diogo Jota, Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic on it.

Manchester United Preview

Man United are only sixth in the Premier League with 27 points. Moreover, Erik ten Hag’s men have the second-worst goal difference among the top half of the table, scoring 18 goals and conceding 21. Their recent form includes three wins and two losses in the last five league matches.

Similarly, the visitors had a midweek match against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. The Red Devils could not afford any rotations, so they will paradoxically be the more tired team on Sunday.

Lastly, Ten Hag cannot count on Amad Diallo, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and others through injury while Jadon Sancho has been suspended by the club. Given the recent performances and long list of absentees, it becomes obvious why the Liverpool vs Manchester United odds favour the hosts so much.

Betting Tips Liverpool vs Manchester United

Over 2.5 goals

The first thing to expect from our Liverpool vs Manchester United prediction is goals, lots of them! The odds on over 2.5 goals stand at 1.33 on Bet365.

The reasoning here is rather simple. First of all, Liverpool have one of the best attacks in the Premier League, as mentioned above. The Reds have scored 12 goals in their last five league matches, and only failed to score more than once in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City in late November. They have also scored in every 2023/24 Premier League match to date.

And second, Man United are just not that good defensively. Their five conceded goals in the last five league games does not look bad on paper, but a team that only recently was beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth at home will very unlikely be able to keep a clean sheet at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah to score anytime

And speaking about goals, can there be a better contender to end up on the scoresheet this Sunday than Mohamed Salah? Bet365 offer 1.83 odds on him scoring anytime against Man United.

The 31-year-old has been in incredible form this term so far, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists in 16 league matches for Liverpool. He is the second-best goalscorer in the Premier League, three goals behind Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland.

Moreover, Salah knows full well what it means to score in the derby against Man United. In the 7-0 win over the Red Devils last term, the Egypt international recorded a brace. In total, he has 12 goals in 12 matches against Manchester United – Mo’s best tally against any team that he’s faced in his career.

Both teams to score and Liverpool win

We do not doubt that the hosts will take the full points on Sunday. However, we do expect a twist, which is at least one goal from the visitors. Bet365 offer 2.30 odds on both teams scoring and Liverpool winning in the end.

Certainly, Liverpool have had an amazing defensive performance in 2023/24. Nevertheless, Klopp's men have kept two clean sheets in the last five matches, and those were games against a struggling Brentford and last-placed Sheffield United.

Man United's 18 goals in 16 matches is nothing to write home about, for sure. But even so, the Red Devils have managed to score against solid teams like Arsenal and Chelsea this season.

If you do not believe in Man United’s ability to score in the derby, then the odds on a simple Liverpool win stand at 1.30.
