Ivory Coast vs Guinea-Bissau Preview

The start of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is upon us, and the tournament will kick off with hosts Ivory Coast playing Guinea-Bissau on Saturday, January 13. The match is scheduled to start at 8 pm local time.

Playing at home, the Elephants are one of the favourites to win the tournament, with their previous triumphs coming in 1992 and 2015. Djurtus, as their rivals are nicknamed, are only making their fourth appearance at the tournament and never advanced past the group stage. Thus, our Ivory Coast vs Guinea-Bissau prediction will have a very clear favourite in mind.

The other teams in Group A are Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, whose head-to-head match will take place the next day.

Ivory Coast Preview

Despite being the hosts, Ivory Coast participated in the qualification campaign for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. They finished second in Group H, tied on points with group-toppers Zambia.

Since the start of the 2023/24 season, the Elephants have played six matches, recording four wins and two draws. They beat Sierra Leone 5-1 in the warm-up match on January 6.

The hosts have one of the best squads at the tournament, with names like Serge Aurier, Frank Kessie, Sebastian Haller and others. Well-known players like Wilfried Zaha and Eric Bailly have not made the final cut but it will barely be important for our Ivory Coast vs Guinea-Bissau tips.

Guinea-Bissau Preview

Guinea-Bissau are making their fourth consecutive appearance at the final tournament which confirms the positive trend the fans have noticed over the years. Djurtus never made it past the group stage, but the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations may be the perfect opportunity to do so, as finishing third in Group A would give them a chance for play-offs.

Since the start of the new season, Guinea-Bissau have played five matches, recording two wins, one draw and two losses. Their pre-tournament friendly was a 6-2 loss to Mali.

Another reason why the Ivory Coast vs Guinea-Bissau odds favour the hosts is the squads. To the neutral viewers, only Mama Balde – currently on loan at Lyon – may be a recognizable name.

Betting Tips for Ivory Coast vs Guinea-Bissau

Both teams to score? No

With all due respect to Guinea-Bissau, we do not have the highest expectations of them for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations debut match. Our first Ivory Coast vs Guinea-Bissau prediction is that Djuruts will fail to score. Betfair give 1.40 odds on at least one team not scoring on Saturday.

The hosts will want to start the tournament with an imposing win, especially since they will be facing Nigeria in the next round. A win to nil may be exactly what the team coached by Jean-Louis Gasset needs to approach the game against the Super Eagles with confidence.

Guinea-Bissau will likely adopt a defensive approach on Saturday as they will be more worried about not conceding. After all, they qualified to the tournament by being secure at the back.

Ivory Coast -1 handicap

Not only do we believe that the Elephants will start the tournament with a win, we predict that Ivory Coast will beat Guinea-Bissau by at least two goals. Betfair offers 1.80 odds on -1 handicap on Ivory Coast.
The tournament hosts are doing better in terms of form and also have the superior squad. Ivory Coast's recent results include 9-0 wins over Seychelles and 5-1 win over Sierra Leone, clearly they know a thing or two about scoring. Given Guinea-Bissau’s lack of experience in big competitions, their defensive tactics may not be enough against a highly-motivated rival.

Keep in mind that the bookmaker will refund the stake if the Elephants beat Guinea-Bissau by just one goal. In case of a draw or a win for Djurtus, you will lose the bet.

Over 2.5 goals

Continuing with the topics of goals, we predict a high-scoring game on Saturday. Every fan wants the tournament to open with an exciting match, and Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau could give us just that.

The Elephants have their reasons to go in with all guns blazing from the first minute – they need the full points ahead of the match against Nigeria. Besides, the fate of Group A may be decided on goal difference, and it is better to not leave it for the last match.

Although we expressed our doubts above, it is not excluded that Guinea-Bissau will score as well. In this case, the hosts will need at least two goals to win the match, bringing the total number of goals to three. And Betfair’s odds on over 2.5 goals stand at 2.00.
