Ipswich Town vs Norwich City Preview

Following a round of midweek matches, the EFL Championship returns this weekend with another set of entertaining games. Among the most exciting fixtures is the clash between Ipswich Town and Norwich City, with the kick-off scheduled for 12:30 pm local time on Saturday, December 16.

Both teams are approaching the match in good form but with different goals in mind, something to consider in the Ipswich Town vs Norwich City prediction. The hosts are involved in a tight title race which makes every point especially valuable. As for Norwich, they have not lost hope for a finish in the play-off spots.

Ipswich Town Preview

The Blues are second in EFL Championship with 51 points after 21 matches, having scored 45 and conceded 26 goals. Ipswich Town are just one point behind league-leaders Leicester City. Their last five matches include four wins and a loss.

Coached by Kieran McKenna, Ipswich have the best attack in the second division. As for their defence, the Blues are not terrible, although far behind Leicester’s 14 conceded goals, which will be important in our Ipswich Town vs Norwich City tips.

Finally, we should say that the results Ipswich have shown in the 2023/24 campaign so far are nothing short of impressive, having been promoted from League One over the summer.

Norwich City Preview

Norwich City are currently placed 11th in the EFL Championship, amassing 30 points in 21 matches. The Canaries have scored 37 goals and have conceded as many. Important to note, Norwich are just three points behind the play-off spots.

The Canaries’ recent form is slightly less impressive, with three wins, one draw and one loss in their last five matches.

Whereas the two teams are approaching the match in commendable form, the hosts have been much more consistent throughout the 2023/24 campaign, so it is not surprising seeing the Ipswich Town vs Norwich City odds being in their favour.

Betting Tips Ipswich Town vs Norwich City

Ipswich Town win

While we have rightfully praised the Canaries in our Ipswich Town vs Norwich City prediction above, we count that the host will get the full three points at Portman Road. Bet365 offers 1.50 odds on a win for the Blues.

Ipswich have played 10 matches at home in the 2023/24 EFL Championship campaign, winning nine of them. The only exception was the 4-3 loss to Leeds United in late August. If McKenna’s men want to keep up in the title race, they cannot afford to drop more points at home.

As for Norwich City's away form, they have recorded three wins, two draws and five losses, which does not speak too well of them. The Canaries can still still hope for at least a point at Portman Road, although it will be very difficult to do so given their poor defence and Ipswich’s formidable attack.

Both teams to score? Yes

While we still believe in Ipswich Town coming out triumphant on Saturday, the match against Norwich City will barely be an easy one.

The Canaries have the third-best attack in the league despite them sitting mid-table. The hosts have kept just one clean sheet in the last five matches, and although Norwich may not be the most fierce competitor away from home, they should be able to score against Ipswich’s average-at-best defence.

At the same time, Norwich’s defensive record is significantly worse, having conceded 37 goals so far. The Yellows have kept just one clean sheet away from home this term, back in August in the 4-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

For these reasons, we expect both teams to score, with Bet365 offering 1.61 odds on it to happen. If we were to combine the previous two Ipswich Town vs Norwich City tips, the odds on both scoring and the hosts winning stand at 2.87.

Over 10 corners

Finally, since we expect an open and entertaining game on Saturday, it is only fair to discuss corner kicks as well. Meanwhile, Bet365 give 1.83 odds on over 10 corners between Ipswich and Norwich.

The two sides bet on attack first which is why we predict a high number of scoring chances on both ends of the pitch. However, not every scoring opportunity ends up in a goal, and many shots end up in corner kicks following deflections off defenders or after saves from the goalkeepers.

To back it up with numbers, there were 10 corners in Ipswich Town’s recent 2-1 over Watford. Similarly, there were 10 corner kicks in Norwich City's 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Given the proactive approach preferred by the two clashing teams, we expect the number of corners to be above average on Saturday.
