Ipswich Town vs Leicester City Preview

Boxing Day is here, and for the EFL Championship it means a new round of games to look forward to. The highest expectations are related to the match between the top two teams in the league standings, as Ipswich Town will be hosting Leicester City on Tuesday, December 26. The kick-off at Portman Road is scheduled for 7:45 pm local time.

The two teams were neck and neck until recently, but a bad run of form has seen the Blues drop six points behind the Foxes. This is one key factor in our Ipswich Town vs Leicester City prediction, as this match will play a huge role in the 2023/24 EFL Championship title race.

Ipswich Town Preview

Ipswich Town are second in the EFL Championship with 52 points after 23 matches, with a record of 47 goals scored and 32 conceded. Joint with Leicester City, the Tractor Boys have the best attack in the second tier, although their defence is much more fragile, which should be taken into consideration in the Ipswich Town vs Leicester City tips.

The hosts have had an incredible 2023/24 campaign, especially considering that they were promoted from League One this summer. However, their recent form includes three wins, one draw and one loss, and they have thus fallen behind the Foxes in the title race.

Leicester City Preview

The visitors had a bad run of form in November but a run of five consecutive wins in the last five league matches sees Leicester City comfortably atop the EFL Championship.

The Foxes are first with 58 points after 23 matches, having the joint-best attack and best defence in the league with 47 scored goals and 16 conceded goals. In case of a win at Portman Road, Enzo Maresca’s men will be well on their way of winning immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Given the recent forms of the two teams, the Ipswich Town vs Leicester City odds predictably favour the Foxes.

Betting Tips Ipswich Town vs Leicester City

Both teams to score? Yes

As we have mentioned above, these are the two best attacks in the EFL Championship going head to head on Tuesday. Naturally, the first Ipswich Town vs Leicester City prediction will have to do with goals. More specifically, we expect at least a goal on both ends at Portman Road. Bet365 offers 1.61 odds on both teams to score.

First of all, the hosts truly have an impressive attack. In the 23 league matches played in the 2023/24 campaign, the Blues have failed to score only on two occasions: in the 2-0 loss to West Brom and the recent 4-0 loss to Leeds United. Both of those games were played on the road, meaning that Ipswich has scored in every home game to date.

Even against the league’s best defence, the hosts should be able to get on the scoreboard. In turn, Leicester should have no problem scoring against Ipswich given their average-at-best defensive performance.

Over 2.5 goals

Continuing with the same line of thought, we predict a high-scoring game at Portman Road. Since Ipswich need to catch up, we expect an ultra-attacking approach from Kieran McKenna, but this should also hurt his team defensively. The odds on over 2.5 goals stand at 1.72 on Bet365.

There have been at least three goals in all of Leicester City's recent five matches, meaning that we are noticing a trend here. While the Foxes score a lot, they have also conceded five goals in the meantime, keeping just two clean sheets.

Speaking about Ipswich Town, there have been at least three goals in four of their recent five matches, with the 2-0 away win over Middlesbrough being the only exception. The Tractor Boys have kept just one clean sheet in these five matches, which also speaks in favour of an goal-happy match on Tuesday.

Under 11 corners

Although it may seem counterintuitive, we expect a high-scoring match between Ipswich and Leicester but with a limited number of corner kicks. Both teams prefer to generate their chances either through calm build-up or fast-paced counters, meaning that there aren’t too many crosses into the box or long-distance shots which may go out for corner kicks.

If we were to talk about recent stats, there have been under 11 corner kicks in all of Ipswich Town’s recent five matches. Since they are the hosts on Tuesday and will likely control the ball, we expect a similar outcome.

As for Leicester City, there have been more than 11 corner kicks in just two of their last five matches, despite the Foxes scoring a total of 15 goals in this stretch of games. Thus, the 1.61 odds on under 11 corners from Bet365 look fairly reasonable.
