Hull City vs Norwich City Preview

The EFL Championship took a break last week because of the scheduled FA Cup fixtures but the competition returns with a new set of matches this weekend. In fact, the round starts on Friday, January 12, with a highly-anticipated clash between Hull City and Norwich City. The kick-off at the MKM Stadium is set for 8 pm local time.

Both teams are hoping for a finish inside the promotion play-off zone this term, something to consider in the Hull City vs Norwich City prediction. However, the visitors will be experiencing additional pressure on Friday since they have been underperforming in recent weeks.

Hull City Preview

Hull City is currently placed seventh in the EFL Championship with 39 points after 26 matches. The Tigers are just one point below the promotion play-off zone. Coached by Liam Rosenior, they have a record of 40 goals scored and 36 conceded.

In the recent five matches in the EFL Championship, Hull City have recorded two wins and three losses. It is this inconsistent form that has led to the Tigers dropping out of the play-off spots.

Before moving one with the Hull City vs Norwich City tips, we should mention that the Tigers lost both of their head-to-head matches against the Canaries last term.

Norwich City Preview

Norwich City sit in 13th place in the EFL Championship with 35 points, and while it can seem rather low, the Canaries are just five points away from the play-off zone. David Wagner's men have scored 42 goals and conceded as many in the 2023/24 league campaign so far.

In terms of recent form, Norwich have one win, two draws and two losses in the last five EFL Championship encounters. The Canaries have gone winless in the last three league games.

Finally, the Hull City vs Norwich City odds favour the hosts, which makes sense considering the recent form of the two teams.

Betting Tips for Hull City vs Norwich City

Both teams to score? Yes

Defensive fragility is the name of the game for both the Tigers and the Canaries, and that is why our first Hull City vs Norwich City prediction is both teams scoring. The odds on it happening stand at 1.57 on Bet365.

To back it up with stats, Hull have kept just one clean sheet in the last five league matches – in the 3-0 win over Cardiff City. Their record of 36 conceded goals is the tied-worst among the top 10 teams in the second division. Norwich and their solid attack will certainly look to take advantage of that.

At the same time, Wagner’s team should have no problem scoring on Friday. With 42 conceded goals, the Canaries defence is the sixth-worst in the EFL Championship. Among the three clubs sitting in the relegation zone, only Rotherham United have allowed more goals. And in terms of clean sheets, the Yellows boast just one such match in the last five outings.

Over 2.5 goals

Expanding on the previous part, we do not believe that the teams will limit themselves to just two goals at the MKM Stadium. Meanwhile, Bet365 offers 1.65 odds on over 2.5 goals on Friday.

Since the two clashing teams struggle in defence but have rather potent attacks, we should expect a high-scoring game. The numbers confirm it as well, as there have been at least three goals in four of Hull City’s latest games.

Norwhich have been more conservative in this regard with just one high-scoring game in recent weeks. However, since they will be playing on the road, we expect that the Canaries will adapt to the high risk high reward approach imposed by Hull City.

Clearly the visitors are not the ones to park the bus, and if Norwich want at least some points on Friday – they need to at least match the Tigers in attack.

Hull City win

Although we have praised Norwich City’s attack, we do not see the Canaries strong enough to grab any points on the road against Hull City. Bet365 give 1.95 odds on a win for the hosts. If you want to combine with our previous Hull City vs Norwich City prediction, the odds on both teams scoring and the Tigers getting the full points stand at 3.50.

Hull City will be motivated to redeem themselves following their defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the previous round. The Tigers have good chances to finish inside the play-off spots but they need to stop dropping points, especially at home.

Norwhich may be able to score on the road on Friday but their fragile defence may end up costing them the match once again. Winless in their last three matches, we cannot see the Canaries getting a positive result against Hull.
