Egypt vs Ghana Preview

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is already underway and the second group stage round is quickly approaching. One of the highlights of the round will be in Group B with the clash between Egypt and Ghana on Thursday, January 18. The kick-off is planned for 8 pm local time.

Despite being the bigger names at the tournament, neither side had a perfect start to the competition, something to keep in mind in our Egypt vs Ghana prediction. Teams can still advance from third place but you typically need at least four points to achieve it, so it is time to start gathering positive results.

Egypt Preview

Egypt started their journey at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-2 draw with Mozambique thanks to a last-minute penalty goal from Mohamed Salah. The Pharaohs are thus second in Group B with one point and two matches to go.

Coached by Rui Vitoria, Egypt have recorded three wins and two draws in the last five matches across all competitions. They have scored 13 goals and conceded three.

A win on Thursday could cement the Pharaohs’ spot in the play-offs, and this will impact the Egypt vs Ghana tips. After losing in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final, the Egyptians clearly have a point to prove. They won the competition seven times in the past.

Ghana Preview

Once a powerhouse of African football, the Black Stars have been rather underwhelming in continental competitions in recent years. Continuing with that trend, Ghana lost their opening match at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations 2-1 to Cape Verde. They currently sit last in Group B.

In the last five matches across the board, Ghana has recorded one win, one draw and three losses, scoring two goals and conceding seven.

Given the circumstances, Chris Hughton’s men need the win on Thursday even more, but the Egypt vs Ghana odds are not tipped in their favour. The four-time African champions have not won the top continental prize since 1982.

Betting Tips for Egypt vs Ghana

Both teams to score? Yes

Since both teams had poor starts to the tournament and will want to redeem themselves in the upcoming match, we do not see why any side would bet on an ultra-defensive approach. In this regard, our first Egypt vs Ghana prediction is a goal in both nets, with Bet365 giving 2.37 odds on it to happen.

If we were to look at the stats, Egypt have three clean sheets in the recent five outings. However, those were matches against teams such as Tanzania and Sierra Leone. Ghana are much more potent in attack with the likes of Jordan Ayew, Iñaki Williams and others available to the coach.

Defensively the Black Stars are far from ideal, with two clean sheets and seven conceded goals. Similarly, the clean sheets happened in matches with weaker opponents, whereas the Pharaohs have Mohamed Salah leading their attack.

Over 2.5 goals

Expanding on the previous point, we expect a high-scoring match on Thursday. Bet365 offer 2.70 odds on over 2.5 goals between Egypt and Ghana.

Firstly, Egypt view themselves as one of the top contenders at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. After surprisingly failing to beat Mozambique in the debut match, Rui Vitoria’s men will need a confident win over Ghana to prove themselves. Moreover, getting a win will be important from the point of view of standings.

And second, the Black Stars cannot afford to sit back and defend against the Pharaohs. With a very solid squad in terms of names, the results have not been up to par for Ghana, but they can hope to bounce back against a worthy opponent. And, of course, a loss on Thursday would put the Ghanians in serious threat of missing out on play-offs.

Egypt win

Although it will be equally important for Ghana to get the win this week, we do not see how Chris Hughton will radically change his team within such a short period of time. Egypt have been much more stable in terms of results over the past year and that is why we back them to take the full points on Thursday.

The Egyptians have a strong squad name-wise, and their draw with Mozambique feels like an accident more than anything – in terms of xG (expected goals), they deserved to win that game. Meanwhile, Ghana’s problems appear to be more structural and their loss to Cape Verde is backed by a poorer display in terms of statistics.

Bet365 offers 1.95 odds on a win for Egypt. If you want to combine it with one of our previous Egypt vs Ghana predictions, the odds on both teams scoring and the Pharaohs winning stand at 6.00.
