Douglas Luiz has emerged as one of the standout players at Aston Villa since arriving from Manchester City in 2019. The 24-year-old Brazilian played a crucial role in helping Villa avoid relegation in 2019-20 and has established himself as an undisputed starter in the holding midfield position. Moreover, Luiz is coming off his best season yet having appeared in all but one of Villa's Premier League matches, contributing 6 goals and 6 assists.

Last summer, Arsenal had a €35 million deadline day bid rejected for the midfielder. Despite strong interest, Luiz committed his future to Villa by signing a new long-term contract until 2026.

However, with another impressive campaign under his belt, speculation over the Brazilian's future has reignited ahead of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal

Arsenal could revive their pursuit of Douglas Luiz as coach Mikel Arteta may need reinforcements in the middle of the park in case of a Thomas Partey departure. In Douglas Luiz, the Gunners would add steel and quality to the central midfield.

With Luiz's contract not expiring until 2026, prising him away won't be easy or cheap. But his combination of defensive strength, technique and Premier League experience could be the ideal addition to help Arsenal's quest for a renewed title challenge next season. With the club back in the Champions League, a wider squad is needed as well.

At 24, Luiz is approaching his prime years and may feel now is the right time to take the step up to a Champions League club pushing for major honours. After a 2nd-place finish last term, Arsenal can offer Luiz the platform to develop further under Arteta while competing for trophies.

Tottenham Hotspur

Neighbours Tottenham are the second favourites to sign Douglas Luiz this summer. Spurs have been linked with a move for the Brazilian midfielder, especially if Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg departs.

After failing to secure any kind of European qualification, Tottenham are set for a squad revamp under incoming manager Ange Postecoglou. With his high energy, attack-minded style, Postecoglou needs mobile midfielders like Luiz who can contribute at both ends.

The Brazilian would be an ideal signing to freshen up Spurs' midfield options for the long term due to his experience and skill set. He would also combine well with the more attack-oriented midfielders like Giovani Lo Celso and James Maddison. However, Aston Villa will be playing in Europa League next term, and it remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old would accept the downgrade.

Chelsea

Despite ranking as outsiders, Chelsea could enter the race for Douglas Luiz's signature. The Blues are facing a midfield overhaul this summer after the exits of Jorginho, N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic since the turn of the year. New manager Mauricio Pochettino currently has Enzo Fernandez and Connor Gallagher as his only viable options in midfield.

While the priority seems to be Brighton's Moises Caicedo, the Seagulls have proved to be tough negotiators with high asking prices. Luiz represents a slightly cheaper and more obtainable target that would strengthen Chelsea's engine room.

With over 100 Premier League appearances already, the Brazilian could slot straight into Chelsea's lineup next season. And still in his 20s, he aligns with the club's strategy of recruiting young talent under new owner Todd Bohely. The only problem may be the lack of European football, as the Blues finished in 12th place last season.
