Chelsea vs Brighton Preview

With the Premier League back in full force, there will be top matches being played in England for the next couple of months. This weekend, one thing to look forward to is the game between Chelsea and Brighton. The kick-off at Stamford Bridge is scheduled for 2 pm local time on Sunday, December 3.

The hosts haven’t won a single league match at home since August 25 and Mauricio Pochettino will want to correct that. However, as we will explain further in our Chelsea vs Brighton prediction, the Seagulls are far from being an easy rival.

Chelsea Preview

The Blues got a new manager in Mauricio Pochettino this summer but the Argentine is yet to put an end to their inconsistent performances. In the last five matches, Chelsea have recorded just one win – the 4-1 victory on the road against a struggling Tottenham Hotspur. Another thing to note is their defensive issues, having conceded eight goals in the last two Premier League matches.

Chelsea currently sit 10th in the table with 16 points and a record of 22 goals scored and 20 conceded. As we implied above in our Chelsea vs Brighton tips, the Blues have just one home win this term – the 2-0 victory over Luton Town from back in the summer.

Brighton Preview

Brighton aren’t doing much better in terms of results. With 22 points, Roberto De Zerbi’s men sit in 8th place, having scored 28 goals and conceded 23.

The Albion had a great start to the season in the Premier League but then followed a run of six matches without a single win between September and November. Brighton finally returned to the winning path on November 25 after the international break when they beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 away.

Perhaps important for the Chelsea vs Brighton odds, the visitors have a midweek match against AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League on their calendar whereas the hosts will have had a full week to recover.

Betting Tips Chelsea vs Brighton

Both teams to score? Yes

Chelsea have kept just three clean sheets in 13 league matches this season, and their most recent one came against Fulham at the start of October. The Seagulls’ situation is even worse as they have not kept a single clean sheet this term, conceding at least a goal in each of their Premier League outings to date.

Putting two and two together, the game on Stamford Bridge is almost guaranteed to have goals on both ends of the pitch. Bet365 offer 1.57 odds on both teams scoring.

If we were to look at the head-to-head matches between the Blues and the Albion, there was a clean sheet in just one of the last five official matches. Considering the form in which the two teams are approaching the game, it is difficult to imagine things going differently on Sunday.

Over 2.5 goals

For the majority of fans, the most entertaining thing about football is goals. And if you fall into that category, then this portion of the Chelsea vs Brighton prediction is tailor-made for you.

Going beyond the fact of both teams having mediocre-at-best defences, we should also praise their attacks. Chelsea, for one, were able to score four past Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, two of the best teams in 2023/24. The poor finishing Pochettino’s team was struggling with at the start of the season seems to have been solved.

Speaking about Brighton, they have scored in every single Premier League so far. Their record of 28 scored goals is among the best in the league, only outdone by Manchester City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

The odds on over 2.5 goals stand at 1.53 on Bet365. To cap it off, there were at least three goals in four of Chelsea’s latest five matches.

Over 5 cards

Yellow cards are the one thing that we will likely see even more of than goals on Sunday. Since both teams are happy to get booked, it is reasonable to expect a high number of them. Bet365 gives 1.80 odds on over 5 cards.

Pochettino is yet to instil his playing style at Stamford Bridge but we have already seen glimpses of what the manager invisions. First and foremost, the Blues now play in a much more intense manner than before, pressing high. And with the pressing structure still in its inception, a high number of fouls is a given. Thus, Chelsea have been shown 45 cards in 13 league games.

As for Brighton, the high-intensity pressing is a staple of any Roberto De Zerbi team. Similarly, this approach yields a lot of cards, and the Seagulls have booked 36 times during the same period. With two pressing teams going head to head, there will be a lot of offences on Sunday.
