The UEFA 2023/24 Champions League group stage has been an entertaining watch, with clubs like Manchester United, Newcastle United and last year’s semi-finalists AC Milan failing to make it out of the group. Even without them, the knockout rounds promise a lot of excitement due to the nature of the competition.

The draw for the UEFA 2023/24 Champions League round of 16 took place on Monday, December 18, giving us the eight pairings for the first knockout phase. The first leg will be played in February and the second leg in March, with exact dates for each match to be announced later. The final at Wembley Stadium is scheduled for June 1.

UEFA 2023/24 Champions League Round of 16 Pairings

Porto vs Arsenal

Porto and Arsenal have faced each other six times in the UEFA Champions League in the past, with two wins for the Dragons, three for the Gunners and one draw.

Porto finished second in Group H tied on points with Barcelona but lost both head-to-head matches to the Catalans. Arsenal are having an incredible 2023/24 campaign so far, currently leading in the Premier League, and they have solid chances of making it to the quarters if they carry with their good form into spring.

Napoli vs Barcelona

Gli Azzurrii had a historic 2022/23 campaign in Serie A, winning their first league title since Diego Maradona. However, they have not been as impressive since the departure of Luciano Spalletti over the summer, although they did enough to finish second in group C with Real Madrid.

As for the Catalans, they have been rather inconsistent since the start of the 2023/24 season, losing the defensive solidity that won them La Liga last term. This tie is one of the more balanced, assuming that neither side improves significantly in the coming months. They have faced off just one time in the past, with one draw and one win for Barcelona.

PSG vs Real Sociedad

It will be the first time in history that Paris Saint-Germain and Real Sociedad go head to head. The Parisians may have experience on their side but the Basques have proven to be a very competitive team, topping Group D ahead of last year’s finalists Inter Milan.

PSG are starting a new project under Luis Enrique and have a lot of room for improvement. As for Real Sociedad, we’ve probably seen their best version already, so the Parisians have good chances of advancing further if they work on their attacking patterns in coming weeks.

Inter Milan vs Atletico Madrid

Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid have played each other in an official match just once – the 2010 UEFA Super Cup, which was won 2-0 by the Colchoneros. This is probably the most unpredictable pairing of the round of 16.

The Nerazzurri are an entertaining team and are currently leading in Serie A. Atletico’s domestic success has been less impressive this term but they still topped group E, and Simeone is a pro when it comes to knockout competitions. No matter who goes through, the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League will lose a top team in this round.

PSV vs Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund came surprisingly in first place in Group F and now stand a very good chance of qualifying to the quarter-finals, having been paired with PSV. The Dutchmen have been impeccable in the Eredivisie thus far but have just two wins and a negative goal difference in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, not the fiercest rivals.

Dortmund and PSV came face to face in the 2002/03 during the group stages, with one win for the Germans and one draw.

Lazio vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are one of the favourites to win the competition this year and their round of 16 opponents, Lazio, are not the most threatening side. The Eagles have been struggling in Serie A, sitting mid-table, but did enough to finish second in Group E.

The two teams went head-to-head in the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League round of 16, and Bayern won the tie 6-2 on aggregate. Given the Italians’ recent performances, a similar result will not come as a surprise.

Copenhagen vs Manchester City

Title holders Manchester City will face Copenhagen. In terms of UEFA coefficient, Copenhagen are the second-lowest team to advance to the round of 16 this term. The Danes looked decent in the group stages even beating Manchester United and drawing Bayern Munich. It remains to be seen whether they can keep up with Pep Guardiola's team, though.

Man City and Copenhagen have come face to face on four occasions, with two wins for the Citizens and two draws. They were placed in the same group last season.

RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid

RB Leipzig might seem like an easy opponent for Real Madrid due to their high defensive line but it is not necessarily so. Last term, the two teams went head to head in the group stage, with one win for the Germans and one for the Spaniards. They had never faced each other before.

Nevertheless, it is impossible to not name Real Madrid as the big favourites to advance to the quarter-finals here as they have a better squad and more experience behind their back.

UEFA 2023/24 Champions League Outright Winner Odds

The defending champions, Manchester City, are seen as the favourites when it comes to the UEFA Champions League winner odds. Pep Guardiola’s men easily topped Group G and now will face Copenhagen in the round of 16, a very passable opponent.

Ranking second is Bayern Munich who, despite sitting second in Bundesliga, have had a terrific performance in the UEFA 2023/24 Champions League, getting Man United eliminated from the competition on the last matchday. In the round of 16, they will face Lazio who they already beat twice in 2020/21.

Real Madrid are the absolute best in the competition with 14 total wins in history. Carlo Ancelotti's men are third when it comes to the UEFA Champions League winner odds. They have been struggling with injuries at the start of the campaign but have shown very positive results nonetheless, winning each of their six group matches. In the round of 16, Real Madrid will go head to head with RB Leipzig, a decent but not impossible rival.
