PEMBREY circuit played host to a number of crownings at the weekend, including that of the NG Road Racing Club’s Open Sidecar Champions Nev Jones and Tom Bryant.
If the Lincoln Refrigeration-backed pair’s lights-to-flag victory in Saturday’s qualifying race was any indication, the weekend looked to be smooth sailing – with a 3.5 second gap to local duo Mike Cookson and Alun Thomas in second.
Smooth sailing quickly parted way for rough seas, as a post-race inspection revealed fractured rear drive pins – which meant the second race of four was to be spent in the garages scrambling for a solution while championship rivals Riley and Cole took 25 points.
Eventually, Jones and Bryant were able to contact a World Championship team willing to part with spares, and the race from Pembrey to Derby was on to collect from Donington Park.
The wee hours of Sunday morning brought spannering, coffee, and more spannering, but the outfit was ultimately buttoned up in time for a cautious shakedown run in Sunday’s qualifying race.
A runner-up finish to the twosome of Cookson and Thomas guaranteed a front-row start for the penultimate points race of the season, where a bronze medal would seal the title up with one round to go.
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line, Jones and Bryant had a slow start to the final race of the day, but made their way past Cookson & Thomas by the end of lap three and stayed out front for the remaining six to take the checkered flag and the title of NG Open Sidecar Champions.
With the pressure off, the team can now enjoy NG Road Racing’s final stop of 2016 next month at Thruxton in Hampshire before a maiden wildcard appearance at the British Superbike Championship’s final round the following weekend at Brands Hatch.
