GP Originals ‘unlikely’ to run in 2020

In GP Originals, News

POST-Classic racers of the GP Originals series could find themselves without any events at all this season after chiefs warned of the little chance remaining to race this season.

The TZ-dominated championship, which was set to run at five rounds across Britain this year, had already dropped the axe on its first two rounds of 2020 before the ACU issued its latest update on a racing return.

With any club action only set to potentially resume from July, GP Originals’ June round at Snetterton was also out the window, leaving only two events left: the Brands Hatch GP round alongside Bemsee and the August Cadwell Park meeting, the latter of which was scheduled to run as a support act to the Bennetts British Superbike championship.

But it could be merely a one-round campaign, if not a complete write-off of 2020, as GPO chiefs warned in today’s statement…

In these unprecedented times, our hosts are challenged to plan for race meetings with reduced numbers of people and implement social distancing measures. Marshalls, understandably, have new concerns about maintaining safety for themselves as well as their competitors. The ACU has indicated there will be no overnight camping. How will this pan out?

Brands Hatch GP is Bemsee’s biggest event and, if it goes ahead at all, will be their first meeting under the new rules. It is unlikely there will be room for a guest class for this season – if we hear otherwise we will let you know, of course.

Due to the uncertainty of the lockdown, the British Superbikes at Cadwell event remains uncertain. The pressures will be huge to deliver such a premium televised event under these restrictions. BSB will not be able to support the GP Originals guest class for this year’s event – we will work as hard as possible with BSB to secure support for 2021.

We wish Bemsee and BSB every success with their 2020 plans and thank them sincerely for their support of GP Originals.

We have everything in place and can start afresh in 2021. The prize fund is in the bank awaiting the winners, the early entry rewards are here, boxed and waiting, the bubbly is safely stored ready to be popped in celebration. We will offer a discounted membership for those that joined this year.
