GP Originals: Kennaugh and Vines split wins at Portimao

GP ORIGINALS made the journey to Portugal this weekend to add British flavour to the Algarve Classic Festival just north of Portimão.

The series’ competitors occupied half the entry list with their 250cc and 350cc Grand Prix machines, while the Lansdowne Classic Series completed the other half with a line-up of pre-1963 GP racers.

As the only motorcycle race on the programme, riders were keen to impress after a 40-minute testing session on Thursday to get to grips with the undulating 2.9 mile circuit.

And despite tropical expectations, Friday’s early qualifying session was held in the wet as GP Originals 350cc champ Hudson Kennaugh chose to sit out the session and accept a back-of-the-grid start, leaving fellow South African Phil Atkinson to take pole on his Chris Rose/Lea Gourlay TZ350.

Relishing his Portuguese roots, Fernando Mendes put his TZ250 in second spot, while Lansdowne front-runner Mike Russell put in a cracking lap on the Manx Norton to take the final front row position. His nearest Lansdowne rivals, Tony Perkin and Duncan Fitchett, sat on row two.

In stark contrast, riders were met with clear sunshine for Saturday’s first race as Kennaugh launched the Veryard Racing TZ350 straight through the pack, chasing down pole sitter Atkinson. Kennaugh took the lead on the second lap and delivered the quickest time of the weekend at 2:03.241s.

Despite missing all the testing, 250-mounted Gary Vines was hot on his heels, while Atkinson retired from the battle on lap four, leaving Vines in second spot before his podium plans were foiled by a broken ignition with only one lap to go.

Jubilant Xclusiv Events rider Neil Gregory bagged his maiden runner-up finish with Fernando Mendes in third on his TZ250.

Mike Russell took control of the Lansdowne field, crossing the line in fifth overall and first of the classic machines, while Tony Perkin and Mark Parrett bagged second and third, respectively, on their Manx Nortons.

Race two was wet yet again and after suffering bike issues in the first race, Atkinson was keen to challenge for the win as he exchanged machines with sponsor Chris Rose.

But Vines caught them all napping, coming through at speed to clinch the over all victory by just shy of six seconds, leaving Atkinson to settle for second and Kennaugh third in the GP Originals field.

Duncan Fitchett put his Manx Norton third on the road, taking the Lansdowne win in the process, with Russell second and Matchless G50 man Richard Hann third in class.
