belgium at the FIFA World Cup 2022

For many years, the Belgium national football team was not included in the list of the World Cup’s favourites list. Since 1938 to the mid-80’s, Belgium either did not qualify for the World Cup, or could not advance to the playoffs. However, after a long series of failures, at the World Cup 1986 in Mexico Belgium qualified from the group and even reached the semi-finals.

Then the setback started again, and over the six world championships, Belgium could not pass the Round of 16. Finally, at the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, the Red Devils reached the quarterfinals.

At the time, the first talks about the golden generation in Belgian football started circulating, and this national team came to be considered a significant power. At the previous World Cup, in the semi-finals, Belgium gave way to the future champions – France, and ended up winning the bronze medal. This is the team’s best result at the World Cups.

Path of Belgium to the 2022 World Cup

On the way to Qatar-2022, Belgium did not face any resistance, guaranteeing their qualification for the final stage ahead of schedule. In their group, the team managed by Roberto Martínez took the first place the round before the end of the qualifying tournament. The Red Devils were five points ahead of their nearest rival, Wales, with a total goal difference of 25-6. Throughout the entire qualifying cycle, Belgium was unbeaten, having only had two draws.

Rivals of Belgium at the 2022 World Cup

The Croatia national football team, which is traditionally considered uncompromising, is one of the group rivals that can be a challenge for Belgium at the 2022 World Cup. Croatia played versus France in the final of the previous World Cup after all. Morocco and Canada are clear outsiders. Canada became a sensation of the CONCACAF qualifiers and Morocco have always been a tough nut to crack on the African continent. But they cannot be compared to the level of Belgium.

The 2022 World Cup seems to be the golden Belgian generation’s last opportunity to win the major tournament. The team’s main star players, i.e. Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois have either crossed the 30-year line or have come close to it. There is no doubt about the players’ motivation: many of them have achieved significant success at the club level – all that is left is winning the trophy with their national team. Bookmakers assess the Belgians’ chances high enough – the odds for the tournament win are on a par with the Netherlands.
