CRMC: Hodge beats Barton to Wheatcroft Trophy win

In Classic, CRMC, News

LEE Hodge added his name to the list of Wheatcroft Trophy winners this weekend after a nearly race-long battle with team-mate Joe Barton at Donington Park.

The two were neck and neck from the off after their Minnovation machines shot out of the gates with Barton in the lead and Ducati man John Dieterman back in third.

But the P&M-mounted duo controlled action from the front and by lap three, Hodge had grabbed the lead, holding off Barton’s advances all the way to the flag to cross the line over 1.3sec clear of trouble with Dieterman back in third.

The three rostrum finishers were also the main protagonists in the other Post Classic Superbike races, where class lap record holder Barton opened his account with a five-second win over Hodge, who just pipped Dieterman for the runner-up spot.

In the second race on Sunday morning, it was a three-way scrap and while the trio was never more than a second apart, Hodge beat Dieterman to the flag by just 0.216sec to take victory, with Barton 1.5sec further back.

Hodge made it a hat-trick of big bike wins in the final, just after the Wheatcroft race, as he levered Barton aside three laps in and powered clear to take the flag over Dieterman as Barton bagged third.
