CARTER Brown launched back into title contention with a hard-fought victory in today’s frantic Honda British Talent Cup battle.
The City Lifting by RS Racing rider took the points lead from Casey O’Gorman after beating Jamie Lyons by less than a tenth of a second.
It was drama at the start as second-row starter and front-runner Sullivan Mounsey was wheeled off the grid and forced to start from the back.
Johnny Garness took the lead from the front row with yesterday’s winner Ollie Walker second and Brown third.
Brown was quickly ahead of Walker and hunting down his team-mate in the lead, but C&M Motors/Tooltec rider Lyons, Banks Racing’s Harrison Crosby, James Cook and Rhys Stephenson were all looking for a way through.
Before long, Lyons was up into second and by the time they hit Luffield on lap three the Northern Irishman had taken the lead as Brown followed him through into second. But from 18th on the grid, Casey O’Gorman was already up into eighth place by lap four.
Back at the front, Brown took the lead from Lyons as he looked to be stretching ahead of third-placed Garness, but they couldn’t quite get away as Lyons retook the lead a few laps later.
But Garness was back into the lead on lap eight as Stephenson followed him up the order into second.
Lyons was shuffled down to seventh as Brown bumped his way back up to third, but by half distance O’Gorman was right on the tail of the top three, passing Stephenson and Brown on lap 11 to slot into second.
But Lyons was back up in the mix and into third moments later, looking for a way through on Lyons as O’Gorman hit the front on lap 12 at Becketts while his title rival Evan Belford joined the nine-way fight for victory.
As the laps wound down, O’Gorman continued to lead and with two laps to go it looked to be a three-way battle between O’Gorman, Brown and Lyons.
O’Gorman led into Copse and through Maggotts, but Brown and Lyons swamped him at Brooklands as Brown took the lead and held on by 0.083sec to beat Lyons to victory. Just behind, Garness pipped O’Gorman by 0.009sec to bank the final rostrum spot.
Brown takes the points lead on 234 with team-mate Belford second on 228 and O’Gorman now third on 223, with Garness and Lyons the only other title contenders heading to the season finale at Donington.
