BEN Luxton pipped TJ Toms in a photo finish this afternoon to lift the Pirelli National Superstock 600 championship.
The JR Performance rider led much of the three-way scrap with Toms and Caolan Irwin and despite Toms’ late charge, Luxton won the drag race to the line to clinch victory by a mere 0.023sec and lift the trophy with one race to go.
Luxton took an early lead ahead of front-row starters Caolan and Rhys Irwin with TJ Toms and Jack Nixon mixing it up in the top five.
While Luxton retained control as Rhys suffered mechanical issues and dropped back, the points leader entered a three-way battle with Caolan and Toms just behind with more than 1.5sec to work with over the rest of the field.
Astro JJR’s Irwin made a move for the lead to knock Luxton back to second on lap six, but Luxton never let him get far away despite threats from behind as Toms looked for a way through.
R&R Racing’s Toms sneaked ahead before making a move on Irwin to take over at the front with just two laps to go, as Luxton fell back into the clutches of Liam Delves in fourth.
But with a late charge, Luxton found a second wind and forced his way back into contention as he diced with Irwin before going after Toms.
At the front, Toms looked on for an almost assured victory with a slight advantage in the closing stages, but Luxton out-dragged him to the line in a photo finish as the points leader went out with the title and 25 points.
Irwin secured third just a tenth further adrift, while Santander Salt TAG man Delves bagged fourth ahead of R4R Vision CPS Team’s George Stanley.
