British F1 Sidecars: Sixth straight win for Birchall boys

In News, Sidecars

BEN and Tom Birchall stretched their perfect run in the Molson Group British Sidecars championship with a weekend double at Thruxton.

While Tommy Philp and Tom Bryant looked to be on to break up their win streak, the 10-time TT winners took the lead with a few laps to go, extending a sizeable gap at the flag.

Simon Gilbert and Paul Thomas took pole on the reverse grid, but it was just a few bends before Simon Robinson and Mick Fairhurst hit the front.

From ninth on the grid, however, Philp and Bryant scythed their way through the pack to take the lead at the back of the circuit, stretching a demonstrative 1.8sec with just a lap in the bag.

But the Birchalls were on the move, sticking their Haith Honda up the inside of Robinson and Fairhurst and Peach and Edwards before continuing ahead of Gilbert and Thomas to end up in fourth at the start of lap three, just ahead of Lewis Blackstock and Paddy Rosney.

After levering their way past John Holden and Jason Pitt, the former world champs set about in pursuit of Ben Holland and Tom Christie as the brothers reeled them in by the time they hit Allard at the start of lap five, charging ahead on the exit of Cobb.

But with the best part of four seconds to make up to Philp and Bryant and just five laps to do it, the Birchalls had their work cut out to catch the Robinson Construction outfit.

Back in the battle for fifth, it was disaster for Life Safety’s Peach and Edwards as their outfit upended at Seagrave with possible contact and they rolled out of contention on lap six.

Meanwhile, the Birchalls rocketed ahead to catch Philp and Bryant on lap seven of 10, making the pass and immediately pulling a gap. And with no trouble ahead, the TT stars dominated yet again to stretch their unbeaten run with seven seconds to spare over Philp and Bryant, as Team JH Racing’s Holland and Christie held off the Silicone Barnes outfit of Holden and Pitt to pip third by 0.045sec.
