Aberdare: Cooper reigns supreme with Welsh Open wins

ROAD racing specialist Dan Cooper stamped his authority on the Aberdare Park Road Races this weekend, taking a clean sweep and the Welsh Open title once again.

The former British 125 champ bagged six wins from six starts and beat his competition by no less than 7.6s, crossing the line in the final race a whopping 25s clear of trouble as he defended his crown.

Cooper took the chequered flag in every race ahead of fellow Honda CBR600 rider Paul Williams, while James Evans was the next closest challenger on a Yamaha R6.

Local rider Jay Bellers-Smith took to the Welsh Open races aboard his KTM Supermono, where he snatched a Heat race podium in third – less than half a second off the runner-up spot – and another third in Sunday’s Final.

Circuit rookie Joey Thompson, who was out on one of Paul Jinks’ Trickbits Suzuki Supertwin machines, beat Smith to Saturday’s Welsh Open Final rostrum as he crossed the line just 0.975s behind Williams in second.
