A new class for road racing?

In News, Roads

A NEW class of machinery could well be heading for the roads if rumours within the inner circles of road racing come true.

As classes for ‘junior’ supersport machines spring up and continue to flourish all over the country, including the Bemsee Team Green Championsip and Thundersport Superteens, road race organisers are rumoured to be considering the addition of a category to fit the CBR500 – RC390 – Ninja 300 – R3 bill.

According to a source close to the Isle of Man race offices, TT officials have held talks in the past year about introducing a new category that could serve as a viable modern replacement to the 125GP class of old.

It is thought that an already-tight track schedule for the fortnight kept event bosses from pushing the new class, and that while the 300s may be more straightforward than the big bikes to set up, there was simply not enough time to squeeze in additional laps.

But news is now trickling out of the Manx Grand Prix paddock about a class to suit both 125GP and modern 300cc machines, akin to the previously-axed Ultra Lightweight and subsequent Newcomers C races which last ran in 2015.

And with a push for more ‘ultra-lightweight’ machinery on the Isle of Man, it could be a matter of time before the production 300s see a debut at Oliver’s Mount, the North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix.
