North West 200: “I should’ve went to the gym today” – Irwin

In News, Roads

REIGNING North West 200 winner Glenn Irwin has hit back at event organisers after chiefs put paid to action today amidst bad weather.

The British Superbike star, who’s only riding in the Superbike class aboard the Be Wiser Ducati Panigale, admitted he could have been somewhere else if he knew track time would be slim.

Amid pressure to keep within road closure times, NW200 chiefs put an end to action after an earlier red flag had already cut Superbike practice short.

But speaking with 30 minutes remaining before the road closure was due to expire, Irwin believed there was much to be gained from more track time.

“We’ve got time, you could do an out lap and a lap,” the PBM rider said. “For me riding a Superbike, you don’t have to ride another class to get enough laps.

“They expect you to come and put on a show for everyone on Saturday with three laps on a damp-ish track earlier, when we could easily do an out lap and another lap.

“Two laps around here is 10 minutes, that’s a lot of miles. To be honest, you’d be better off at the Snetterton [BSB] test. That’s the way I see it.

“I should’ve went to the gym today. It’s ridiculous, I get on great with the organisers, but today…. it’s stupid.”
