Manx GP: Lightweight double for Farrell as Chawke retires

In Manx Grand Prix, News, Roads

ANDY Farrell bagged his second Manx Grand Prix victory in today’s MGP Supporters Club Lightweight race after disaster struck for dominant leader James Chawke.

With over 50s to work with, the Paton rider suffered a shock retirement on the final lap and left Farrell to power away to his second win of the week.

Junior winner Chawke was quickest out of the gates, beating Dave Butler to Glen Helen by over a second as Gary Vines sat third another second further back, a mere 0.2s ahead of David Lumsden.

And while Chawke looked to be stretching a gap at Ballaugh, he dropped over 20s after being black flagged at Sulby Bridge to make adjustments as Butler, Vines and Wednesday’s Lightweight winner Andy Farrell slotted into the top three.

But the plot thickened as Chawke was credited back 29s for his black flag stop in which marshals found nothing wrong with his bike, putting him back into the lead by five seconds at the Bungalow as he crossed the line to begin the second of four laps with an 8.5s lead over Vines and Farrell.

Chawke continued to power away at the front of the leader board and despite having to slow down to tuck into the pits for fuel at the end of lap two, the Mark Coverdale Paton rider clocked a new lap record of 114.993mph.

A swift pit stop allowed Chawke to stretch a 42s lead at Glen Helen, while Butler went for a three-lap stint and took second place, 1.5s clear of Farrell, who recovered from a scare in the pits as he missed his stop box.

Despite Chawke pulling out another nine seconds on the way to the Granstand, disaster struck and he was forced to retire at Ballagarey Bridge, leaving Farrell to lead three seconds ahead of Vines, with Butler just half a second further adrift.

Determined to make it a double, Farrell put his head down and stretched another few seconds over the mountain on the final lap to take his second win of the week, 6.3s ahead of Vines and 8.8s clear of Butler.

Retirements included Victor Lopez Santos, Nigel Rea, Eric Lenser, Peter Moore, Ian Stanford, Tommy Henry, Yoshihiro Kishimoto and Paul O’Rourke.
